Customer Review: Uncomfortable, decent sound.

I purchased these as a back-up pair of earbuds, and so I was looking for something inexpensive that had good sound for the price. These fit the bill in some ways, but I wouldn't recommend them for frequent use.
These have a number of pros: the sound (for the price) is quite good. The bass is not as deep and three dimensional as other earbuds, but they don't require high volumes to bring out the sound, either. Unlike some more expensive earbuds I've had, the cord is a reasonable thickness, and does not frequently crackle from movement or static electricity (this is compared to others, at least). For the most part, I would be happy using these most of the time, if it weren't for the cons.
The cons are have to do with comfort. These are made of hard plastic, without any give. I never appreciated how important the thin, rubberized ring around the Apple earbuds are until I wore these for a little while. Without any flexibility, the shape of the earbuds becomes much more important--unless they fit exactly, they will be uncomfortable. This brings up a second problem: the shape of these earbuds. They are not circular, like the Apple earbuds. Instead, they have made them to have a slight corner on one side (imagine taking a circle, quartering it, and stretching out one quarter to be more square). This, I think, was to help with sound by covering the ear canal better. However, added with the unusual thickness of the stem that meets the wire, makes these a bit too large to fit into an ear comfortably (in my ear, at least). I'm not Prince Charles, but I'm a guy with decent sized ears, and these feel like they are pulling and poking my ears when they are in. The best analogy I can make is this: the materials and design remind me of the earbuds you get from airlines for in-flight entertainment (the sound is better, of course). For some, I'm guessing these will fit with no problem. But if they don't fit exactly, the materials that they used to make them will render them painful to wear really quickly.
Sony seems to make the same earbud in black with a silver highlight. Looking at the reviews for that version, it seems the comfort issue is pretty common. I'm not sure whether Sony makes a better designed earbud at this price point, but I would definitely recommend spending a little bit more to get a better product.
