Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-Q68LW Clip-on Style Headphone with Retractable CordCustomer Review: Clever design makes for durable headphones Summary: 4 Stars
I've had a hell of a time finding a decent pair of headphones. I've tried innumerable variations of in-ear headphones but they never seal properly on one or both of my ears. So I've tried to find headphones that would be compact, have good sound, but were the more traditional on-ear design.
I had been using the Koss KSC-75's and similar variations for a while because they had good sound quality and were compact. Trouble was that I kept destroying them. Inevitably I would get the cord caught on something as I was moving around and they'd be ripped from my head. The older cord and plug design seemed to handle this decently well, but I'd need to replace them at least once/year. I figured at $15 or so, it wasn't a big deal. Technically they have a lifetime warranty, but I just didn't want to hassle with it.
However their latest redesign changed the plug structure and it is a piece of crap. Instead of replacing them maybe every 6 months to a year I destroyed two in a couple months. So I started shopping around for different designs again. I gave another in-ear headphone a shot, the very spendy Bose headphones and they actually worked well until, once again, I caught the cord on something and destroyed them. A minor inconvenience on a $15 pair of head phones, but a HUGE problem on ones that go for $80-90.
Finally I decided to try these head phones and they totally solved my problem. The sound and comfort is comparable to the KSC-75's but with the cord retraction system built in, they keep me from destroying them. So I'll put my iPod in whatever pocket I intend to carry it in and then ensure there's just enough cord to connect to it. Without slack in the cord, I don't get caught on anything and thus my headphones are saved. Plus I never get tangled cords because I just push the buttons and the cord is gone.
I do wonder how well these will work in the long term, if the retraction mechanism might eventually fail, etc. But so far I've had these for a couple months and they are definitely the best pair of compact headphones I've had in a long time. Highly recommended.
Only 4 out of 5 stars because of sound quality. The sound is perfectly fine and comprable to other phones in this class but there are certainly more expensive head phones out there with better sound quality.
