Customer Review: Outstanding Earphones for Skype and "Must Hear Surroundings" Listening; Not Bad for Music

I have two sets of these. I may get a third. They are essential for those times where you don't want to block out all ambient noise but still need fairly good earphones for music or Skype:
1. For example, maybe you need some earphones that let in more sounds from your surroundings to monitor kids, traffic, or just be safter. In that instance the "silicone tip" earbuds which deliver GREAT sound and block out SO much ambient noise really aren't the best to use.
- These earphones do NOT seal the ear canal like the new generation of "soft silicone surround" earbuds, so you can hear ambient sounds. But if you shove the drivers deeper into the ear canal, the sound quality is good and no problem with volume.
2. You can adjust the amount of ambient sound you can hear by shoving them deeper in the ear canal, or leaving them a little looser.
- Unlike Sony's other "sideways driver" earphones Sony Ultra Lightweight MDR-W08L Vertical In-The-Ear Headphones when you pull these out of the ear canal part way, they won't reinsert themselves (which is the case with the "hoop over the hear" MDR-W08L's). So you can temporarily loosen these for a conversation, or swing the driver out of the ear canal altogether, but the earphone won't slip off your ear (in general! very tiny ears may pose a problem). When you are finished, shove them back in deeper.
3. Fit kind of adjusts itself; the driver is a disc, but oriented sidways. So the disc will almost fit every ear canal size - if you have a wide canal, the disc may slide in deeper, but with a narrower canal, not so deep.
4. I like these for Skype with a netbook (with screen panel microphone) or iPod Touch (4th gen with built-in microphone) because I can hear my own voice and don't overcompensate by raising my voice because silicone buds have the canal really well sealed.
5. I like these for watching DVD's on the computer (or player) because I don't feel so isolated from my surroundings, and my expectations of "musical clarity" are different for soundtracks than pure music.
In terms of sound quality, adequate, no worse than stock Apple ear buds (which lack silicone tips and just perch on the ear ledge). For MUCH better sound quality, especially when you want to "isolate" yourself from your surroundings and really sink into the music, or if you want to preclude eavesdropping, try any of these instead (I selected buds that are usually under 15 dollars):

BUT keep in mind that the silicone tipped ear buds REALLY reduce ambient sound and are NOT good for Skype because you find yourself shouting to hear your own voice.
Finally, some people are "ear hook" people and some are "hoop over the head" (or over the base of the neck) people. Sony makes very similar headphones in an over the head model, and the product link is above.
