Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MDR-AS35W Sports Headphones Lightweight with Powerful BassCustomer Review: Remarkably Good So Far Summary: 4 Stars
First, a quick note: The product I received when I ordered this item does not look like this picture. It looks like this --> Sony MDR-AS35W Stereo Sports Lightweight Headphone with Powerful Bass. It's possible what I received is different from what the customers with negative reviews received. That would account for the fact that I've had a completely polar opposite experience than they described. The primary difference, just so you're not surprised, is how they fold -- see below.
Now, a review after about 1 week of use:
This is an extremely good set of headphones for $23. Reading 1-star reviews that critique these like they're to be used in a recording studio is ridiculous. The critical reviewers lowered my expectations to the point where I almost didn't order them. I'm glad I decided to ignore them. I've used the other models of sony headphones. In particular, I was a fan of the ones that look like the ones in this picture. MDR-A35 I believe. They were a good blend of decent quality, portability and comfort that would stay on your head during a run. So after going through several expensive sets of headphones, I decided to see if I could get back to my roots.
Strengths:
1. Short/modular cable is perfect for a workout. At about 20 inches, the short cord goes to where you'd wear an mp3 player armband with enough slack that you can turn your head and move your arm without tugging...but not the slightest bit extra so it doesn't flop around. The attachment doubles the length, making it longer than normal headphone cables so it can reach your pocket, your backpack, just about anything but the floor.
2. Rubber driver covers are comfortable and provide a little bit of sound isolation. Once again, perfect for a gym environment. Products that have sound isolation tend to make people lovers or haters due to the way they fit. Perhaps a poor fit is what made sounds "muddy" as the other users described them. I think I have pretty normal ears but have never been that impressed with sound isolating ear phones (from $250 Sleek Audio drivers to cheaper alternatives and everything in between) but these are among the better ones I've used. They won't block out all sound like the in-ear phones...but they do a pretty good job of dampening outside sounds.
3. They fold differently, which is also a weakness. However, these have a hard plastic case that protects their form when they're folded. Anybody who's used the headphones like the picture shows is familiar with the feeling you get when you put them in a pocket or a gym bag...that feeling like you're not quite sure you're ever going to see them in one piece again. The hard plastic case allows for a fairly compact footprint...AND a clear conscience
4. $23...I'm not expecting to hear DMB's finger prints grind against the ribbing on a guitar string. That's just a really reasonable price tag.
Weaknesses:
1. They fold differently than the picture shows so they're not as compact, but they're pretty close.
2. I suppose they could be solid gold...or come packaged on the head of a gorgeous swimsuit model. I suppose that'd be worth a fifth star. But come on!! 23 bucks!!
The negative reviews don't accurately represent these headphones. If you're on the fence enough to read these reviews, get these.
