Customer Review: Quintissential College Alarm Clock

This is the updated version of the classic Sony cube "Dream Station" alarm clock that everyone you knew had in college. It's a bit smaller and has a lot more features, but it's the same old Sony alarm clock you know and trust.
Pros:
- Nigh on indestructible. This one is built for abuse.
- Dual. . .no, make that. . .Quad alarms. It has two separate alarms, but also has a weekend mode that switches these over to weekend settings which are independent of the other alarms. Result? 4 semi-independent alarms.
- Simple to use. Many dual alarm clocks are a pain to set, reset, and turn off, often requiring some complex sequence of button presses while dancing a jig just to turn of one alarm and turn the other on. This one is much more straightforward and the instructions aren't even all that necessary.
- Easy to read display. 'Nuff said.
- Nap mode. Hit the button and the alarm is set to go off in 10 min increments with each press.
- Battery backup alarm. If the power goes out, it'll sound the buzzer at the alarm time and try to wake you up at least.
Cons:
- Sound quality. What sound quality? I think I could make out that there was music on that radio station, but I'm still not sure.
- Two brightness settings. Blinding and nuclear explosion blinding. If you can't sleep b/c this thing's so bright, at least you'll be able to entertain yourself all night making shadow puppets. Might want to wear sunscreen to bed, though.
- No progressive wake up alarm. This feature is getting to be more common, yet is missing on this one. It's essentially a progressively increasing volume on the alarm (either radio or buzzer) that is much less jarring to wake up to than sudden-on alarms.
For the cost, it's definitely worth trying out. It's completely functional and will likely survive Judgment Day. You can't really ask for much more at this price point, but I wish there was a better sounding, higher end model with all these features plus a progressive wakeup. 4-stars.
