Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony ICF-CD73W AM/FM/Weather Shower CD Clock Radio - WhiteCustomer Review: Don't put it on the shower floor Summary: 2 Stars
I have owned 2 of these exact same Sony ICF-CD73W models. The first one lasted a long time and had decent reception in the shower. Not great, but I could usually get the station I wanted.
After a few years, the first one died. Since I generally liked this radio, I bought a new one. For the price, you'd expect it to be at least as water resistant as a water resistant watch you can take in the shower. I have a water resistant watch that cost about the same amount, and I've showered with the watch on for years.
This radio is water resistant to the extent that it can be used in the shower, but you must keep it off the floor of the shower. The reason is, the body of the radio is made of two plastic halves that are held together by silicone, and the silicone water resistance is weak. There should be a gasket behind the silicone to really make the body of the radio water resistant. There is no gasket inside the body of the radio to really protect it from water. The radio body relies totally on the silicone resisting water. This is strange, because both the CD compartment and the battery compartment are sealed by gaskets.
In the past, I had always used the radio in a shower caddy that hung from the shower head. So I never experienced any problems. However, the radio is very heavy. It puts a lot of strain on any shower caddy that hangs on the shower head, and it also takes up a lot of room in the shower caddy. I have had this second radio for months, with no problems. But when I tried setting the radio on the shower floor, it worked ok for about a month, but then the radio stopped working. When I took it apart, it wasn't full of water, but all the electronics inside the radio were wet. After taking apart the radio so the electronics could dry out for a day, surprisingly it appears to be working again.
The radio is ok as long as you keep it in some kind of shower caddy to keep it off the floor of the shower, or hang it over the shower head. Shower spray didn't hurt it, in my experience. If exposed to anything more than incidental shower spray, this radio will get water inside, because the water will penetrate through the silicone, and there is no gasket to keep the water out.
Personally, I won't be buying another Sony ICF-CD73W model. For the money, I think you can get a better-made shower radio that has an internal gasket protecting the radio body, so that the radio body is more water resistant.
