Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DPF-XR100 10.2-Inch WSVGA LCD (16:10) Digital Photo Frame with AVCHD Video Playback (Black)Customer Review: Sony is Balogna Summary: 1 Stars
Hello to all my fellow consumers!! Tired of getting ripped off paying for things and then getting set aside having to troubleshoot the devices problems?? Well I am! Here we are in the last quarter of 2010 and yet no one can still get a complete digital frame right (or maybe they don't want to) with the functionality that we want unless we keep calling the manufacturers' support and make a big stink about it. The first review that was added to this item only mentions pictures and that's great but this item is supposedly a video playback and lets face it, I want what I pay for and I'm certain you do too. I'm going to try to keep this short, techy and sweet so I turn this frame on and the first thing I want to do is play video.
VIDEO
I pop in an a 720 res AVI and I receive file is not supported. I chatted with Sony to trouble shoot and they state the below limitations are the following or the video is not supported.
AVI max res 640x480
MP4 max res 1280x1080
MP4 AVC/H.264 max res 1920x1080
I then found an app called "Convert AVI to MP4". This then allowed me to convert the AVI to MP4 but it also increased in size. Now I'm certain many of us have a boatload of awesome movies that work fine regardless of the format and in honesty, we should not have create more for ourselves just because their product is misleading and not mentioning the specifics. Even the instruction manual it states video playback MIGHT not work. Sony!! REALLY......?
Anyhow, I try low res MP4 and I only get video playback only for the first time I try to play the video with no audio. The actual audio was stereo 5.1 channel (which is probably not supported). Then after I tried to replay it. Great Scott!! The infamous File is not supported error message shows.
So I then grab a low res MP4AVC 700MB video (Batman Begins) and WHAMMM!!! PPPOOOWWW!!! BOOOOMMM!! (My hat tips off to Adam West and the crew) I get another file is not supported error message.
There is also a 2GB limitation of video playback.
I refuse to no longer sit with customer support and waist my time troubleshooting an issue that should have been resolved on a very expensive picture frame. Sorry to disappoint my fellow movie buffs on this. The Pic frame is a great for pics and short videos of AVI. I used a short clip I recorded from my Canon 8 Meg Digital Elph.
SOFTWARE
The NAV on the remote control is troublesome. Every time you want to change from slide show to clock/calendar to Video. You have to go through a menu to select the type slide show or calendar or clock you would like to use. This should be a "Set it and forget it" but it has to be done every time you change the mode.
The LED backlight is a one time manual setup. Who the hell designs these things. E=MC2'd here.
The LED backlight should have different modes depending on what your using it for. Clock, video plack, and slideshow. If I only had and "EASY" button. Who the heck needs their backlight at level 10 during clock mode at 5 in the morning and in contrast, needs level 2 for video playback. Sony should change their name to LAZY. Maybe they want your back light to burn so you can buy a new one or charge you on the labor and replacement.
HARDWARE/ MUSIC LOVERS
The hardware is good but their is no audio out jack which sucks for a bunch of music lovers (including myself) and others who want to listen to music or watch their movie on this with the audio equipment they have. Not everyone wants to just plug this in to see slide show on their monitor.
WIDGETS
The clocks and calendar formats look horrible. Some have two or three world clocks and are just not easy on the eyes. Only one or two seems suffice.
ALARM CLOCK
Needs to have battery backup functionality like a boat load of other clocks. No sleep option and no snooze option.
AUTO TIMER
Auto timer is actually a scheduled timer. You specify what day and time the device goes off and on in chart of the week.
No WiFi for all of us who have data on there networks or other computers. The only exception here is if you have a bluetooth on your NAS.
I hope this helps. This is going back and I'm just going to grab and ARCHOS 10 inch tablet as an all in one that have anywhere around the house.
I noticed this item is backordered on sony and amazon. So I hope you either return or put sony in its place to improve their device. My picture is getting sent back tomorrow morning.
