Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony DCR-HC62 1MP MiniDV Handycam Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom

Customer Review: Just got it
Summary: 4 Stars

After agonizing over which camera to buy, I took the plunge and bought this one. I had bought and returned a Sony mini DVD camcorder after finding the results to be pretty poor. I didn't want to spend the dollars to move up to HD, and people told me that Mini DV was the highest quality image one could obtain short of going to HD.

After having the camcorder for about a week and using it a couple of times, I am overall pleased with the purchase. The camera does pretty well in relatively low light, and the sound is good too. My goal for this purchase is making movies of the family, not shooting a documentary, and for this purpose I think it is fine. It is easy to use, and the touch screen is fine - some reviews said it was too small, but honestly I think it is fine.

On the negative side, it is lighter than I thought it should be. I am someone who judges quality on heft, but I guess that is really not that relavent. Some might consider it a plus - this camera is super light. Also, some of the covers over the various inputs and outputs are pretty flimsy and look like they might break down the road. But for now, everything is fine.

Finally, as some of the other reviews mentioned, it does not come with a cable to connect it to Sony's VRD device, which I also bought. However, the cable is cheap here on Amazon, so you might want to buy one now to have it available.

Customer Review: Great camcorder. MiniDV makes a lot of sense
Summary: 5 Stars

Great value! If you want great picture quality just less than HD, miniDV is the format. Think again about your priorities before buying a non-HD DVD or HDD camcorder as MPEG formats are lesser than miniDV in pic qty besides their other limitations.
*** The dcr hc-52 is widely available in stores. But look at hc-62 specs(much better resolution) and spend $50 more to get a much better product.
Put a filter over, yr lens will benefit a lot.

Customer Review: Absolute garbage!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

This camcorder makes me sick! I got it in october and used it for a few weeks and it worked well. But three weeks after ive been using it it started to get these gray bars across the screen so I contacted sony(there tech support is a joke they should be ashamed!)and sony said to reset it so I reset it and it didn't work so I contacted sony again and they said that it was a faulty camera. So I sent it back and I got a new one.You won't believe this! It started having the same problem so I called sony AGAIN and they told me absolute rubbish an didn't even tell me anything I could do to fix it!!!! So this time I took it back to the store and bought a JVC Everio GZ-MG330 and it is better than this piece of garbage by a long shot! In my opinion if you want a camera that doesn't last long and even if you take it back and get a new one and it still breaks this piece of trash is for you! p.s I used to be a sony fan but this awful piece of trash and their HORENDOUS costomer service made me change my mind. I am no longer a sony fan.

Customer Review: Perfect home movie camera.
Summary: 5 Stars

Love this camera for both home movies and still photos. With a 1 gig card it holds over 2k images on high quality. The battery life is excellent, although I still recommend a second battery. The video quality is outstanding for home movies, on board mic pics up sounds great.
I would suggest a case to put this in, as well as extra battery, and plenty of tapes. It has replaced both my digital camera and old camcorder.

A wonderful buy for anyone shooting home video and more.

Customer Review: great value
Summary: 4 Stars

Really great camcorder for the price. Good vid quality, nightshot for low light. Has a nifty time-lapse mode that can let an entire day pass in a few minutes. The only real down side, IMO, is the lack of a mic input jack.
