Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony 8 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Black)

Customer Review: Very versatile media player
Summary: 4 Stars

I received my Sony 4 GB Walkman for Christmas of '08 and used it heavily ever since (for 10 months). I've grown to love it, accepting the few flaws it has. My experiences over the years lead me to believe Sony products are usually on the better end of the spectrum. This player offers a great alternate to an iPod.

PROS:

Sound Quality - The sound is absolutely stunning after you have tweaked it to your liking. I have always found the sound of Sony products superior and this is no exception. It can produce deep bass and well-rounded mids & treble.

Video Quality - The image quality is top notch. I think it looks just as crisp as any iPod.

Battery - It really does last the advertised 28 hours for listening to audio. For video it allegedly lasts 4 hours but I haven't watched enough to find out.

Volume Button - It's a physical rocker button on the side which makes it very easy to blindly adjust volume.

Build - The casing is VERY durable and solid. It's not made of plastic but rather a tinny aluminum casing of some sort (like Razor cellphones).

CONS:

Playlist Functionality - The shuffle function is probably the most annoying aspect of this player. You must first select a song in a playlist to shuffle a whole playlist. After you've chosen a song, the shuffle ALWAYS plays the first in the playlist before continuing. Shuffle All for all audio on the player ALWAYS plays the first song in alphabetical order. Therefor every single time I use Shuffle All, the first song is #1 Crush by Garbage. You can't edit playlists on the player either.

Firmware - The firmware could be improved. I finally upgraded to Windows Vista 64-bit a few months ago and it doesn't seem as stable as XP was. I painstakingly attach cover art to all my mp3s and I'd say about 10-15% of them do not display it on the player. Also, making your own thumbnails for videos simply doesn't work on Vista 64-bit.

Volume/Equalizer - The volume on the unit is inherently low. Unfortunately the equalizer is one of those that decreases volume when you increase a certain frequency. And different EQ settings affect different master volume levels. It's pretty bass ackwards until you have it nailed down.

Video Format - It's too picky about the resolution and format. It will only play 320x240 video in wmv or mp4.

Overall I would say this is a very good value. Some may consider my cons as nit picky. I don't require all the bells and whistles of an iPod Touch but this has the basics of a good mp3/video player. The price tag makes it very attractive. If you are looking for a direct alternative to the iPod Touch, try the Sony Walkman X Series.

Customer Review: I Enjoy my Toy

This is a Very good Product For playing Music. I have no problems with it. If I stick to music. But the memory is small for what I would like to store on It. 8GB does not cut it now days and the screen is VERY small for Videos and pictures.
But besides for that I love it.I have even drop it a few times and its still working.

Customer Review: Not what I expected...
Summary: 2 Stars

This MP3 player was much smaller than I expected it to be. Also, it did not come with a plug-in charger. The only thing provided to charge the phone was a USB cord. Therefore, I would always need to be around a computer to charge. Because of that, I returned it for a refund.

Customer Review: great when it works. . .
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this mp3 on Amazon back in late March '09. I was looking an mp3 with FM radio and since Sony is suppose to be good, I bought this model. It's great. . . FM radio pretty good. My own music pretty good. I even downloaded some podcasts from NPR. Loved it. . . until today.
I called the Sony Customer service and they said it would need to sent in to fix which would be $77.00!!! I just bought this in March. When this mp3 works, it is great. If you are willing to pay $90 for several months of use, I would recommend this mp3.
